About Happy Little Trees

Traditional bonsai specimens require an outdoor site where they are exposed to the sun, rain and snow.  Because these trees do not survive for long indoors, this led to a mistaken belief that all bonsai are difficult to maintain.  But in fact, miniature trees from Happy Little Trees, Ltd. are as easy to care-for as ordinary houseplants.

In nearly every culture, trees are considered to be symbols of life.  A bonsai is a miniature tree grown in a shallow dish that is trained to resemble a larger tree growing in nature, and lives to an equally old age.  The practice originated in China more than 2000 years ago, and spread to Japan around the year 1300 AD.  As the art developed, it was heavily influenced by Buddhist and Taoist principles of balance and harmony.

The Japanese word, "bonsai," literally means, "tree in a pot," and does not imply any particular species of tree.  Traditional specimens include Azalea, Elm, Maple, and many Pine and Juniper varieties.

Nearly any species of tree can be trained into a bonsai.  Growing a variety that will thrive indoors allows one to have contact with it every day of the year.
